The Orchard House, home of Louisa May Alcott and setting for Little Women


The Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts was built around 1650 and was the home of Louisa May Alcott where she wrote & set the novel Little Women in 1868. Today, it is an historic house museum and available for guided tours year round.

The Tate House Museum- Portland, Maine


The #TateHouseMuseum was constructed for Captain George Tate (1700-1794), who had arrived in the Colonies with his family around 1750. Captain Tate served as the Senior Mast Agent for the British Royal Navy, overseeing the cutting and shipping of white pines from Maine to England. His position bestowed upon him a prominent status in the community which is reflected in the style of architecture selected for this home. With its clapboards still unpainted, Tate House is one of two residences in Maine with an unusual subsumed dormer in the gambrel roof. As the only Pre-Revolutionary home in Greater Portland open to the public, Tate House offer an insightful glimpse at the 18th century and life in Colonial Maine through impressive period furnishings, beautiful grounds, herb gardens, and unique architecture.

A. A. Garcelon House in Auburn, Maine 1890

The house stands on the west side of Main Street, south of Auburn's downtown, midway between Vine and Elm Streets. Its part of Main Street was once Auburn's most fashionable residential area. It is a ​2 1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, with asymmetrical massing typical of the Queen Anne style. It is one of Auburn's finest Queen Anne Victorians, with projecting bay sections on its two street-facing sides and a projecting corner tower rising three stories, with a rounded roof. Bands of scallop-cut shingles separate the first and second floor and also fill the gable ends of the projecting bays. Spindle-work porches on both floors adorn the main facade. The interior of the house is largely unaltered, retaining period woodwork, including fireplace mantels and trim. A period carriage house was demolished in 1985
