January 10th, 1791: Portland Head Light is first lit
Portland Head Light
#OnThisDay in 1791 Maine’s Portland Head Light was first lit. Construction on the lighthouse had begun in 1787 by order of George Washington. Sixteen whale oil lamps were used as the original source of illumination.
