In 1857, Amos Bronson Alcott ("Mr March" in Little Women) purchased 12 acres of land in Concord, Massachusetts including a home that had been on the property since the 1600's. The Alcott's had previously lived in Concord in 1840 but had moved to Central Massachusetts to establish Fruitlands- an attempt at a Utopian commune based on Transcendentalist principles. The Fruitlands commune was short lived and a fictionalized account of that time can be found in Louisa May Alcott's "Transcendental Wild Oats"

Back in Concord- forty apple trees grew on the land Mr Alcott had purchased leading to the name of "The Orchard House". Using the original 1600's home as a base a smaller tenant home was moved and attached to the rear to expand the home. Mr Alcott undertook a considerable remodeling inside the home, installing alcoves and building an art studio for his youngest daughter May ("Amy" in Little Women). During the remodeling the Alcott's next door at Nathaniel Hawthorne's home The Wayside (the Hawthorne's were living in England at the time)

At the urging of Thomas Niles (her publisher) and her father, Louisa was asked to write a novel that would have widespread appeal for girls. At a small shelf desk built by her father Louisa sat down to the task and assemble a cast of characters loosely based on her friends and family and their experiences in Concord.

Louisa based headstrong "Jo" who loves literature and writing on herself. "Meg" the oldest sister was based on Anna Alcott, "Amy" the artist her youngest sister May, and "Beth" her sister Elizabeth who had died of scarlet fever shortly before the Alcott's moved to The Orchard House.
The park at the top of Salisbury Hill is free and opened to the public. It's only about a ten minute drive from the Worcester Art Museum. The tower has several rooms or chambers, even a fireplace- but for most of the year these are gated & locked. For the past few years the Tower has been opened each Sunday in October. Not sure if thats a permanent schedule- but worth looking into. The foliage views from the top of the tower are probably quite nice.

Frozen Waterfall Hike- Royalston Falls, Massachusetts (February)

Royalston, Massachusetts is a small town up against the New Hampshire border in Central Massachusetts. About an hour and a half drive from Boston, the sparsely populated town is mostly covered in forests and wetlands and boasts a number of natural wonders including three waterfalls (Doane's Falls, Royalston Falls, and Spirit Falls), miles of hiking trails, and campgrounds at the scenic Tully Lake. All of the locations noted are operated by the Trustees of Reservations and are open to the public year round.

Directions to the Royalston Falls Trail head

From the Boston area you'll drive out Route 2 West to Exit 19 near Phillipston, and from there take Route 68 up to Royalston Center (signs will mark Royalston Center as an historic district). From THIS point, don't trust you GPS! It will most likely want to take you down Falls Brook Road, which turns into a dirt road, which turns into a fire road, which turns impassable. There is a trail head over on this side of the Falls but I wouldn't recommend following Falls Brook Road very far without 4 wheel drive. Instead keep an eye out for the Trustees sign for Jacob's Hill and then keep to the left when you come to the next fork, staying on Route 68 (Warwick Road) until it merges with Route 32 (Athol-Richmond Road). It's a bit of a drive and bit remote- so be prepared for your cellphone reception to be spotty.

Entrance to the trail head & parking at Royalston Falls

The parking area is marked by a green Trustees sign and there's room for a number of cars. In the Summer this is a somewhat popular spot and part of two larger hiking trails. The Tully Trail is a 22 mile loop around Royalston that will take you by all three waterfalls in town plus a number of other outdoor highlights including a brief detour into Warwick State Forest. Using the campgrounds at Tully Lake, this could make for a great day or two of hiking. Royalston Falls is also located on the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail which stretches 117 miles all the way from Connecticut through the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts and up to Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire (Monadnock is about 18 miles hiking from Royalston Falls).

The hike down to the Falls from the trail head is listed as 0.8 miles, and it's mostly moderate but can get tricky as it's often very wet and muddy. After a big rain we've seen sections of this walk down into the forest flooded which can take some time to navigate. There are one or two minor water crossings- just a quick hop over a brook really. When you reach the Falls Brook Shelter, the trail will flatten out a good amount and then follows along the river down to the Falls. The trail markers are yellow & white, but it's a well worn trail here and hard to lose your way.

In winter- it's a bit of a different story. You won't find many of other hikers, and I would never attempt this hike without a decent pair of micro-spikes. Our walk down this weekend was very icy, and while there are some wire safety rails around the Falls itself- that area is almost always a pure sheet of ice and very dangerous. It's a 45 foot drop into chaotic rocky gorge so be very careful.
As mentioned, from the parking area there's a 0.8 mile hike to the Falls. The first section from the parking area goes down, down, down hill (keep that in mind for the walk back up). This section tends to be very wet, and was fairly iced over when we hiked it. Without spikes I don't think we'd have made it very far. When you reach the Falls Brook Shelter your are very close to the waterfall. The shelter offers bare-bones sleeping for up to 12 hikers, on a first come basis. Besides four walls and a roof over your head, its open and exposed to the elements and there are no facilities.
At the shelter you'll come to a crossing over Falls Brook. From this point you basically just follow the water down to the falls. The trail is marked with white blazes and easier to see without snow on the ground, but as long as you keep close to the water you're going the right way.
Falls Brook itself is a peaceful little stream that meanders along this section of woods with a few drops here and now. There's a small pond where the water pools up a bit, unnamed as far as I know.
A bit wild & overgrown its hard to get up close to the shore, and this time of year- hard to tell where the shore stops and the ice begins. Oh,and don't trust ice on moving water. Even if it looks frozen solid here it's unlikely to be safe.

I'll note again how peaceful and quiet Falls Brook is, and the woods here mostly empty besides a chickadee or two. It's funny, because just past here is a roaring waterfall that seemingly comes from nowhere and drops 45 feet into a icy gorge, but you'll barely hear the roar on the way.

Royalston Falls iced over in Winter

This is a shot into the gorge all iced over at Royalston Falls. It's so hard to capture the scale of this with a camera- it's a bit more than a four storey drop and the canyon walls are all built up with giant icicles with water kicking up a roaring frothy mess down below. This is one of my favorite spots in all of Massachusetts, partly just because of the surprise when we first discovered it.

Edward Hitchock, early Professor of Geology (and the first scientist to study dinosaur footprints found throughout Central Massachusetts) visited the Falls in 1838 and suggested the name "The Royal Cascade". Partly for its majesty, and likely in part for Issac Royal for whom the town of Royalston is named. Locals at the time called this Forbes Falls as it was on land owned by Calvin Forbes who farmed in the area.

As mentioned earlier, there is a safety wire strung around the gorge to prevent hikers getting too close to the edge here- but in winter the trail along the corners of the waterfall can be a solid sheet of ice, and the safety wire- which is only at waist height, is not going to stop you from going over the edge if you slip suddenly. You really need some micro-spikes or real crampons to be safe here. This is a beautiful spot- but very remote, and actually dangerous if you're not careful.

The walk out of Royalston Falls is a bit more strenuous then the walk in. It's uphill the whole way- I'd say moderate for experienced hikers, but again usually wet, muddy and slippery which will add a lot of time and effort.

By the parking area you'll notice a small graveyard, this is Newton Cemetery. The earliest stone here dates to about 1794, with the majority falling in the early to mid-1800's. The stone pictured is marked a a soldier in the American Revolution. Working on some research about that and will post an article when I find out more.

An easily accessible lighthouse, you can typically pull right up and park then walk the grounds in the off season- in fact you might be the only ones out there on a cold day. In the summer it's a quite a bit busier, there's a popular beach just across the way. Owned and operated by the Town of Newburyport the lighthouse offers open houses periodically through the Summer months (every 3rd Sunday May to September 1-4 was the 2019 schedule).

First lit in 1788, the lighthouse replaced bonfires built by locals on Plum Island Beach that had guided ships into port until that time. Plum Island Light was the 13th lighthouse to be built in the United States and the first keeper, Abner Lowell, was appointed by George Washington. Abner kept watch at the light for 20 years and was succeeded by his son Lewis Lowell, who was replaced his son Joseph in 1823. All together the Lowell family (father, son & grandson) watched over the light for 47 years.

Originally illuminated by whale oil lanterns, the lighthouse went electric in 1927 and was automated in the 1950's. Storms and shifting sands has forced the light to move position several times over the years and the current tower dates to 1898. North across the mouth of the Merrimack River is Salisbury Beach, which has it's own unique navigational marker "Ben Butler's Toothpick"

Each year Harvard's Hasty Pudding Club picks a Woman (and Man) of the Year. The Woman of the Year is honored by a (very short) parade down Mass Ave in front of Mr Bartley's & the Harvard Book Store over to Holoyoke Street where Farkas Hall is located. In 2015- Burlington, Massachusetts native, Boston College & Saturday Night Live alum, co-founder of the Up-Right Citizens Brigade and one half of everyone's favorite Golden Globe hosts- Amy Poehler was selected.
The Hasty Pudding Club is a social club founded at Harvard in 1795 by Horace Binney. The name "Hasty Pudding" is derived from what the members ate at their first meeting. From the Hasty Pudding Club came the Hasty Pudding Theatricals which is the 3rd oldest theater organization in the world. The group presented its first production in 1844. Filled with social and political commentary, and extremely heavy on puns, the productions had been typically male students with all the female roles performed in drag. President Theodore Roosevelt is among the many alumni that performed in drag for a production. In recent years female students at Harvard have taken on a greater role.
There are a number of rules/traditions for each production- they were explained to me once by a Harvard graduate that invites us to the productions if some extra tickets come up. One is they have to make fun of Yale, and the others....escape me. Needless to say there are many Harvard in-jokes, but the productions we've seeen have been a lot of fun for the not-so-Ivy-League...and again they are really, really heavy on puns.
The Woman of the Year Parade is a short affair, under 20 minutes and a good crowd will gather once the parade is under way. Recent Women of the Year include Scarlet Johansson, Mila Kunis, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anne Hathaway. We headed up to Newburyport this past weekend to go to Plum Island, and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in the hopes of seeing some Snowy Owls. Parker River is one of the best places in Massachusetts to spot these winter visitors- and we did see one......very, very far out in the marsh beyond my camera range. Some other birders were nice enough to get a peak through their lens though.

It was a nice January day- not too cold, and the surf was rolling in some nice waves. Heading out to the beach at Plum Island we saw a number of surfers enjoying the day.

Parker Island Wildlife refuge follows about 7 miles south of Plum Island Beach on this sandy isthmus, and as a nature reserve no surfing is allowed- but down at the very southern tip of the island is Sandy Point Reservation which run by the state of Massachusetts and is open to all as a beach. Parking is extremely limited, even in the winter. We caught another surfer down this side of the island riding the waves along a stretch of rocky shore.

"Ancient Nubia Now" at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts- October 13, 2019 to January 20, 2020. A collection of jewelry, pottery and sculpture for the Sudanese Nile Valley. We caught up with this show near the end of its run at the MFA on a Bank of America "Museums on Us" weekend and we were glad we did. We've been putting off a big MFA visit until April when the new Basquiat show opens, but an afternoon exploring the MFA is always a good fallback for a cold and rainy January afternoon. If you have a Bank of America card you can get free admission to a number of museums around the country on the first full weekend of each month- click the link above for a State-by-State list.
For more than 3,000 years, a series of kingdoms flourished in what is today the Sudanese Nile Valley, a region known in antiquity as Kush and by modern scholars as Nubia. Ruling from the capitals of Kerma (2400â1550 BCE), Napata (750â332 BCE), and Meroe (332 BCEâ364 CE), Nubian kings and queens controlled vast empires and trade networks, rivallingâand even for a brief time conqueringâtheir more famous neighbors, the Egyptians. The Nubians left behind remains of cities, temples, palaces, and pyramids, but few written records. As a result, their story has been told in large part by othersâin antiquity by the Egyptians, who used propaganda to cast Nubia as the barbaric âother,â and in the early 20th century by American and European scholars and archeologists who brought cultural bias to their work." border="0" data-original-height="994" data-original-width="1600" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4yqH4h6Y5wMn7pP3GYlv7Pru0lxVAEzv1EO2FxQRLry93fh7crtukCgTmw21RtTqsAcY9juMaohJfh_kehbO2VK9GyigmZy67MdXmCVpDT3aQqOnpyp2OK7Okh5WNGCHJQpMnuKdPflh1/s400/2.jpg" title="Ancient Nubia Now at the MFA Boston " width="400" />

Ancient Nubia was home to some of Africa's earliest Kingdoms and Boston's MFA sponsored many of the earliest archaeological expeditions in this region of the Southern Nile along Egypt's border with Sudan. An area rich in gold and positioned along important trade routes towards their more famous Egyptian neighbors to the North the earliest Nubian Kingdom or Kush flourished beginning around 2000 BC.
These Nubian examples share many aspects with their Egyptian counterparts but differ in several ways. For one, the Nubian swabaty are only used for royal burials. Most figures hold a narrow hoe in their left hand and a broader hoe in their right, and over the back is slung a pack of seeds but Nubian figures have been found to hold different tools, stand in different poses and have text unique to the region.
